Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers about gardening and landscaping calculators.

What is a gardening calculator?

A gardening calculator is an online tool that turns your measurements into a concrete quantity or plan — how much grass seed, how many bags of mulch, or how many plants a bed will hold. You enter the dimensions, and it returns the amount you need to buy or apply.

How do I calculate lawn area?

Multiply length by width for square or rectangular lawns. For irregular shapes, split the lawn into smaller squares, rectangles, triangles or circles, calculate each one, and add the results. The Lawn Area Calculator does this automatically and accepts mixed shapes.

How much mulch do I need?

Mulch is measured by volume. Use the formula: area in square feet × depth in inches ÷ 324 = cubic yards. For example, a 300 sq ft bed at 3 inches deep needs about 2.8 cubic yards. The Mulch Calculator returns the exact figure for your dimensions and also converts it to bags.

How many plants should I put in a bed?

Divide the bed area by the product of plant spacing and row spacing. A 10 ft × 4 ft bed with 12 inch × 12 inch spacing fits roughly 40 plants. The Plant Spacing and Plant Population calculators handle the grid maths for any spacing you choose.

Are these gardening and landscaping calculators free?

Yes. Every calculator on GardenCalc is free to use, requires no account or sign-up, and runs entirely in your browser.
